Los Angeles Student Anger Stress Management Testimonials

Staff Feedback

Principals and teachers give feedback based on their observations – and results –
from grades and test results to behavioral changes in the classroom and on campus.

Anger – Stress
“Being in the epicenter of downtown Los Angeles and South Central Los Angeles, you might guess that our students experience the kind of difficulties and challenges that produce a lot of stress. We depend on the Student Stress & Anger Management to help us reduce student agitation and anxiety, and to put life back into perspective for our students. Let me just say that our students love it! It is like a miracle to witness the absolutely calm and quiet of a room full of one-hundred 11-14 year olds for 30 minutes (and at the end of the day to boot).” – Beverley Clarkson, Principal & Tom Carter, Title I Coordinator

“I think the students now understand that they actually have some control of their stress and anger.” – 6th grade teacher

“The students were always very focused and relaxed during the program! I could see how relaxed their bodies and muscles were – no one was fidgeting and they looked less tense.” – Mercedes Taylor, ESL teacher

“This program gave students important skills and techniques to use when they are upset, stressed, or angry. The best part is that students can take these techniques with them into a variety of situations.” – Laura Kuzminsky, 6th grade teacher

“My students are enjoying and benefiting from your stress management program! I can already see results, and so can they!” – Cathy Underwood, teacher

Behavior – Classroom Management
“On all dates observed, the students visibly relaxed and appeared to de-stress. Both the students and I enjoyed these moments of relaxation in an otherwise hectic week. The skills we learned in this class helped us in our interrelationships as well as improving academic areas. Thank you very much!” – Ms. Estelle Guerrero, history (ESL) teacher

“The Stress & Anger Management Program has been a tremendous help in changing the behavior of my students.” – Maryann Ali, math & science teacher

“Before stress management, I spent about 10 min. of instructional time getting students calmed down at the start of class. Also, I spent a great deal of time trying to get students to stay focused. The other problem we had is that nearly every day I had students entering the room and remaining angry. Students crying or loosing temper over insignificant events was common.

After stress management began, there was an immediate decrease in the time it took my students to calm down and focus (from 10 min to 5 min.) In addition, they remained more on task once they started. The biggest improvement, however, was attitude improvement and a reduction of anger. I have had only one student demonstrate anger or defiant behavior since the beginning of stress management.” – 8th grade math teacher

“I could see a significant difference in my students after just one session.”
– Erin Faulkner, teacher

“The students were much calmer at lunch after taking part in the activity [Stress & Anger Management Program].” – Michael Peters, Dean (detention)

“When we arrived to 5th period, right after the program, students were relaxed, not hyper. Thank you Ms. Edstrom for my peace of mind.”
– Claudia Tamayo, 6th grade ESL2

“I know that my stress is reduced after your sessions. If I’m less stressed, I imagine I’m modeling ‘non-stressed out’ behavior to my students which is very positive. My students couldn’t wait to get to the program – and they were happy, refreshed and ready to learn when we returned to class. I think your program helped in promoting even better relationships between myself and my students.” – Linda Lozada, 6th grade teacher

My sixth grade class and I recently had the pleasure to take part in Krs Edstrom’s program and it was a wonderful experience for all of us. We participated in the program during the last period of the day right after P.E. Normally this is a time of the day when students are very hyper and hard to calm down but I found that after our stress management sessions, students were calm and relaxed. I spent less time quieting them down and explaining the activity. I highly recommend this program to all teachers and students.”
– Laura Kuzminsky, 6th grade teacher

Grades – Focus – Better Test Results
“Teachers have expressed to me how important and effective the techniques have been. Students are more focused and engaged in the learning process.”
– Evelyn Wesley, Principal

“After the sessions, my students are calm and relaxed. I spend less time quieting them down and their test performance is 5-10% better!”
– 7th grade teacher

“I felt that the stress management today, right before a test, was the best thing we could have done for the students. They seemed more relaxed, clear-headed and focused. Test results were a bit higher than the usual “gamut” of scores.” – Julie Zisk, 6th grade teacher

“Many of the students are using the methods during homeroom on the alternate days we don’t meet with Ms. Edstrom. Testing is coming up soon and many of the kids are planning on using these skills during down time of testing.” – Ms. De La Cruz, teacher

“Just a few weeks ago, my students were about to take a very important test. I sensed they were unfocused and distracted, so I decided to guide them through a quick stress management session. I followed the same pattern as in your actual stress management program. I could feel the energy in the classroom relax. A few minutes later, students took their test and I reminded them to stay focused and relaxed. When I scored the tests, I noticed that students performed better than the previous test. I believe the stress management session beforehand gave the students that added ability to focus.” – Laura Kuzminsky, 6th grade teacher

“Everyone agrees – students and teachers alike – that this program has helped afford our students the peace of mind for them to approach their studies and testing with a concentrative and steady mind. It is a hypothesis of mine that this program has helped contribute to the continued rise in our Periodic assessments scores (and hopefully the CST scores) for those who have participated in the program.

I am constantly being stopped by students all week long and asked about the next class. Furthermore, teachers both this year and last have noted the calming effect this program has had on the students’ ability to focus and be effective academically.” Beverley Clarkson, Principal & Tom Carter, Title I Coordinator

Mental Outlook – Self Esteem – Life Lessons
“As students are getting involved in the meditation process, they gradually get transformed to a more positive state of mind. Their self-image has improved and their mind-set has become a more accepting, flexible one to try out new things even in the presence of peers. We especially enjoy the complexity of the program. For all of us English learners Ms. Edstrom is modeling a wide variety of vocabulary, life-situation, moods and feelings that are all positive, uplifting and relaxing to mind and body.”
– ESL teacher

First week: “Children came into class very noisy with a lot of energy. I was surprised at how effective the session was at calming and quieting them. They tend to be very relaxed after the stress management session, more peaceful, less noisy.”

Third week: “The students have really come a long way from when they first started. They seem to be a very different group of children since they started this program. This is a life long lesson.” – Nadyia Jones, KYDS Enrichment teacher

“My students benefitted greatly from KRS Edstrom’s Stress & Anger Management Program. We talked in fact, in class, about positive attitudes and not worrying so much about things out of our control. I think the exercises were awesome lessons, not only for school, but for life as well.”
– Robert Calzada, 6th grade English/history teacher
